Richard Gerstl

Jill Lloyd’s most recent exhibition for the Neue Galerie New York (Richard Gerstl, June 29 to September 25, 2017) was the first exhibition devoted to this exciting Expressionist artist in a US museum. It charted the work and life story of the first Austrian Expressionist, who committed suicide in 1908 following a disastrous love affair with Mathilde Schönberg, wife of the avant-garde Austrian composer, Arnold Schönberg. The exhibition presented over 40 paintings and drawings, including several of the artist’s riveting self-portraits such as Nude-Self Portrait (1908) painted just before the artist’s suicide.

Richard Gerstl received outstanding reviews in many publications, including The New York Times (here), Wall Street JournalNew Yorker and The Financial Times.
